Inventory Management Best Practices

1. Implement ABC Analysis

Not all inventory is created equal. ABC analysis categorizes your stock into three buckets:

• A-Items: High value, low volume (e.g., 20% of items accounting for 80% of revenue). These require strict daily monitoring.
• B-Items: Moderate value, moderate volume.
• C-Items: Low value, high volume (e.g., screws, packaging tape). These can be monitored loosely with simple visual reorder bins.

2. Shift to Cycle Counting

The traditional annual physical inventory count requires shutting down the warehouse for days and is highly prone to fatigue-driven errors. Instead, implement Cycle Counting—counting a small subset of inventory every single day. A modern ERP can automatically assign cycle counting tasks to warehouse workers on their mobile devices based on the ABC classification.

3. Automate Reorder Points (Safety Stock)

Never rely on human memory to know when to reorder goods. Your ERP should be configured with mathematical reorder points for every SKU, factoring in supplier lead times and historical demand variance. When stock dips below this safety threshold, the system should automatically draft a Purchase Order for review.

4. Eliminate Manual Data Entry with Barcoding

If your warehouse staff are writing serial numbers on clipboards and typing them into a computer later, your data is already compromised. Implement rugged mobile barcode scanners that feed data directly into the ERP in real-time. This ensures absolute accuracy during receiving, picking, and dispatching.
